With a wry sense of humour and a laconic Southern drawl, Hoagy Carmichael is a wonderfully idiosyncratic performer of his own music. His quirky words and phrasing are rapid and rhythmically driven, quite often complex and mixed with jive slang. There is a speed and lightness to Hoagy's delivery which articulates first and foremost the rhythm rather than the meaning. This piece is meant to be fun but I've always believed that you should take fun very seriously.
First performed by the Richard Alston Dance company at the Marlowe Theatre 12 February 2008.
